‘Kids drinking 19 glasses of wine a week’






LONDON: A large number of young children inBritain are drinking too much alcohol, and not getting enough sleep to stay alert at school the next day, a government report has revealed.

The report is based on three separate studies conducted by the UK's schools health educationunit. The first study found children as young as 12 are drinking the equivalent of 19 glasses of wine a week. Four per cent of this age group surveyed drunk 28 or more units in the last week, which exceeds the daily unit guidelines for men of three to four units and women of two to three units.

Some children are also not getting enough sleep. Almost half of the teenage girls admitted struggling to stay alert at school, the Sunday Express said. Some 48%of 14 to 15-yearold girls confessed to not concentrating on school work due to sleep deprivation, a problem suffered by 41% of boys in the same age group.

മണിക്കൂറില്‍ 140 കിലോമീറ്ററാണ് ഇ സിക്‌സിന്റെ പരമാവധി വേഗം. വാണിജ്യാടിസ്ഥാനത്തില്‍ നിര്‍മ്മാണം തുടങ്ങിയ വാഹനം ബുക്കുചെയ്തവര്‍ക്ക് ഉടന്‍ നല്‍കിത്തുടങ്ങും. 46,800 ഡോളറാണ് (23.37 ലക്ഷം രൂപ) വില. പെട്രോള്‍, ഡീസല്‍ വാഹനങ്ങളെക്കാള്‍ ഇ സിക്‌സിന് 75 ശതമാനം യാത്രാചിലവ് കുറവാണെന്നും നിര്‍മ്മാതാക്കള്‍ പറയുന്നു.

ചൈനയിലെ വാഹന നിര്‍മ്മാണ കമ്പനിയായ ബി.വൈ.ഡിയില്‍ അമേരിക്കന്‍ നിക്ഷേപകനായ വാറന്‍ ബുഫെയ്ക്ക് 10 ശതമാനം ഓഹരി പങ്കാളിത്തമുണ്ട്. റീച്ചാര്‍ജ്ജബില്‍ ബാറ്ററി നിര്‍മ്മാതാക്കളായ ബി.വൈ.ഡി കമ്പനി ലിമിറ്റഡിന്റെ സഹോദര സ്ഥാപനമാണ് ബി.വൈ.ഡി ഓട്ടോ. 2003 ല്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ സ്ഥാപനം നിര്‍മ്മിക്കുന്ന വാഹനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ചൈനയില്‍ വന്‍ വില്‍പ്പനയാണുള്ളത്.

Breakthrough' in Alzheimer'

. In what is being hailed as major breakthrough, scientists claim to have unravelled the precise function of genes which are known to make people more at risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. A team at Massachusetts Institute of Technology says that its findings may soon pave the way for early detection of the crippling brain disease and also of potential new treatments for the most common form of dementia. . There is no cure or effective treatment for Alzheimer's and current drugs help people manage some of their symptoms. In their research, the scientists used yeast to unravel how the genes known to affect the risk of Alzheimer's work on cells in the brain. They show for the first time that the risk genes affect a hallmark protein in Alzheimer's called amyloid. The research discovered that amyloid was disrupting a vital process in yeast called endocytosis, which transports important molecules into and around cells. It found a number of the genes, including one called Picalm, could influence amyloid's ability to disrupt endocytosis. It provides a previously unknown link between the genes and the amyloid protein, and sets a new direction for treatment research, say the scientists who worked on the role of the Alzheimer's risk genes not only in yeast, but also in more complex models using worms and rat brain cells. Prof Julie Williams of Cardiff University, chief scientific adviser to Alzheimer's Research UK, has welcomed the findings published in the 'Science' journal. "In 2009 we discovered that the gene Picalm affected the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. We've since identified a further three genes which, together with Picalm, show for the first time that the process of endocytosis may play an important role in Alzheimer's. 'This study now brings the pieces of the puzzle together and shows that Picalm influences the damaging effects of amyloid. Our genetic discoveries are now pinpointing new disease mechanisms which can lead to the development of new treatments. This is enormously exciting," Williams was quoted by the 'Daily Express' as saying. Dr Marie Janson from Alzheimer's Research, the UK, added: 'We are very excited by these promising results.'
